Squidcopy Open the desk

Squidcopy A writing desk for freelance copywriters

Lock the brief. Then write.

Most copy breaks before the first sentence. Squidcopy won't let you jump into words until the brief is locked. Reader, one idea, offer, one action. Once all four are set, Claude writes the draft.

Brief

  • ReaderWho reads this, and where they are right now.
  • One ideaOne sentence. Not a feature list.
  • OfferExactly what they get, on what terms.
  • One actionWhen they finish reading, they do one thing.

Draft

Miss one item and the draft button stays locked. With all four set, Claude writes from exactly what you locked and labels anything without proof.

4/4 locked

The problem

Write first, think later, revise forever.

No clear reader

Copy written for "everyone" reaches no one. The opening lands in the wrong place because nobody decided what the reader already believes.

One piece, three asks

Sign up, buy, and share, all at once. The reader does none of them.

Promises the offer can't keep

Sentences run ahead of the research, and numbers and claims appear out of nowhere. When the client asks for proof, there isn't any.

The required brief

Four items. Miss one and you don't write yet.

  • ReaderOne specific person, not "potential customers".What they already know, what they've tried, what they doubt.
  • One ideaThe one sentence you want them to believe after reading.Side benefits stay only if they prove that sentence.
  • OfferWhat they get, what it costs, on what terms.Write it as it really is. No scarcity or deadlines that don't exist.
  • One actionWhen they finish reading, they do exactly one thing.Leave an email, book a call, buy. Pick one.

Formats

One brief. Every format.

Ads, emails, opt-in pages, sales pages and video scripts are just different ways to perform the same brief. Change the format, never the reader, idea, offer or action.

  • AdOne idea seen at a glance. One ask at the end.
  • EmailThe exact offer you locked. No extra promises.
  • Opt-in pageSay what they get before asking for the email.
  • Sales pageAny claim not in the research gets labeled or cut.
  • Video scriptThe recorded voice. No switching speakers mid-script.
# Practice piece on the desk: checklist before buying a serum
# Made-up details for training, not a client file.
reader = "Women 28–40 in cities, sensitive skin"
idea = "3 questions to ask before buying a new serum"
offer = "One-page PDF. Free. Sells no serum."
action = "Leave an email to get the checklist"

format = "opt-in page" # this can change; the four lines above can't

Method

Four rules the desk keeps for you.

Goal

One piece asks for one thing

Two asks split the reader's attention. Lock the action first, and every sentence after it pushes toward it.

Research

VOC tells you what customers say, not what works

Customer quotes help you choose words. They don't replace data. If proof is missing, write the assumption down instead of deleting it to make the draft look certain.

Edit

Six passes, one job each

Trim, Clear, Specific, Credible, Voice, Grammar. Merge them into one and every pass is half done.

Deliver

An edited draft isn't a proven draft

When you deliver, state the evidence status: not measured, observed, or proven. Don't let the copy claim what the numbers haven't shown.

Write it yourself

Open a blank piece. Claude only uses what you've locked.

  • Lock one reader and one action
  • Record customer quotes word for word
  • One idea before any sentences
  • Edit one pass at a time, then deliver

Get a second read

Send your filled-in brief for one review before the copy starts.

This button opens your email app with what you filled in, addressed to hello@squidcopy.com. You can also write to that address directly.

Your data

Your work stays on your device.

Saved in your browserBriefs and drafts are stored in the browser you're using. No account needed. Clearing browser data deletes them, so download the handoff when you're done.

Sent to Claude only when you clickOnly when you click propose, draft, edit or check is that piece's brief and draft sent to Claude (Anthropic) for processing.

Writing by hand always worksThe trial has a limit on AI runs per device. When you reach it, you can still write by hand and use every other step.
